8 Reasons SoHo is the Best Neighborhood to Work In
Some of our favorite parts of the video production office lifestyle in downtown New York City.
First things first. The best way to arrive at work is caffeinated. SoHo has a plethora of coffee shop choices for even the most sophisticated taste buds. We’re lucky enough to have La Colombe next door to our SoHo office. And while there is always an overflowing line down the street from this coffee mecca, our daily dilemma is whether to wait in line at La Colombe and be a few minutes late for work or come back down for a break when the line has died down? The answer: both. Caffeine is always an added benefit to the work environment, especially in the film production world where long nights are the norm.
SoHo is easily accessible to everyone. Whether you’re coming from the eastside, westside, uptown, Queens, or Brooklyn, all subway lines make a stop for you to hop off onto the beautiful cobblestone streets of SoHo- The perfect amalgamation of fashion, international cultures, boutique tech agencies, and unique eateries (more on these next). Not only is it attractive to work in SoHo- it’s easy on the morning commute and a perfect jump off point for post-work activities- it’s attractive for your clients also! Clients may not have the time to travel deep into Brooklyn (even if you have found the coolest work environment to take over) but they wouldn’t mind traveling downtown and escaping midtown’s congestion.
3. CITI BIKES.
Speaking of accessibility...if the subways weren’t easy enough, Citi Bikes are everywhere in SoHo, including right outside of our office! With the neighborhood’s many small, quiet one-way streets, it is a beyond picturesque area to take a quick breezy bike ride to other surrounding neighborhoods, such as the Village, LES, Little Italy, Chinatown, the Financial District, Tribeca, or choose the sunset route to Brooklyn along the Williamsburgh or Brooklyn Bridge.
The key to a good neighborhood is who make up your neighbors. Soho is an eclectic combination of artist lofts, commercial retail spaces, and niche dining experiences. We’re thankful that many of our clients are also our neighbors, so it’s nice to see familiar faces around the hood. As a video production company that has a long history creating sports content, we’re glad that brands, such as Under Armour, REI, Adidas, Eastern Mountain Sports, Oakley, Swiss Army and Billabong all have flagship stores around the corner. The fans of skate culture haven Supreme (located next door) keep us on our toes as they wrap around the block awaiting the next fashion release, and the G-Star Raw store on our other side is a destination for every fashionista.
5. FINE CUISINE, FINE LUNCH CUISINE.
Nothing makes the work day better than having a favorite lunch spot. Around JPI, we all have a go-to spot. For starters, our Director Jay favors an omelette from The Grey Dog, and Chandler can’t wait to get his hands on Grandma's Pie from Prince Street Pizza. Other favorites include the chicken parm from Parm, the “lunch special” from Mottsu, the reuben from Delicatessen, the four cheese mac & cheese from Macbar, and everything from Cafe Duke...speaking of which, be right back...it’s about that time.
If you’re looking for a unique sweet treat, there’s the cronut. Yes, one of our lovely neighbors at the Dominique Ansel Bakery invented this delicious croissant-donut hybrid. They’re made fresh everyday and fans flock from all over the world to get one before they sell out. (People get in line hours before the bakery even opens!)
And, if you’re looking for a healthy snack, SoHo is home to the Chobani cafe, where you can experience combinations of greek yogurt like never before.
6. INTERESTING PEOPLE.
Look at all the people...living in harmony. Seriously, it wouldn’t be uncommon to see a photo shoot taking place on your way to work. The cobblestone streets are full of European models and people dressed to their best. (Did we mention you could go shopping in SoHo?)
7. INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM.
As previously mentioned, SoHo attracts people from all over! We’re an international agency, and we’re glad we can treat our clients nicely here- there’s something for everyone! If we were feeling adventurous, we could take a client to a dumpling house in Chinatown and pick up gelato in Little Italy for dessert. The possibilities are endless.
8. HAPPY HOUR.
The best way a work day could end is by celebrating at happy hour. And if you’re lucky, hopefully you like your coworkers enough to enjoy grabbing a beer with them outside of the office. Clients won’t mind the bountiful cocktail options either! Some of our regular spots are Puck Fair, Brinkley’s, and the Spring Street Lounge. We’ve also enjoyed watching the World Cup at Oficina Latina! (plus who can beat a 2 for 1 drink special?)
